Anxiety Behavior Therapy

There are many types of effective anxiety behavior therapy that are available for anxiety disorders, and new treatments that can help most people with anxiety disorders are being developed through research so most sufferers can be helped to lead productive, fulfilling lives.

If you have been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, your therapist must first determine the type of disorder or the combination of disorders that are present as well as any other conditions such as depression, drug or alchohol abuse. In many cases the coexisting conditions are so strong, particularly alcohol or drug abuse, that they need to be treated and brought under control before treatment for the anxiety disorder can begin.

Frequently people suffer with anxiety disorder and depression together and both can be treated together. The therapy that is commonly used to treat these disorders is known as anxiety behavior therapy.

An Effective Therapy Technique

This type of therapy teaches the patient to recognize the symptoms of anxiety and the behavior and incidents that bring on those symptoms. Then the patient learns methods of controlling the anxiety or making it go away completely.

When you meet with your therapist or psychiatrist you will discuss your anxiety and when those feelings manifest themselves. You will talk about the symptoms and what actions or behavior cause you to feel those symptoms. Then you will learn to control the unwanted behavior.

The therapist, through anxiety behavior therapy, will help the patient learn to cope with the situations that tend to bring on anxiety through controlled exposure to them and by teaching the patient breathing techniques designed to help you to relax and reduce stress. For instance, if the patient experiences anxiety when speaking to a large group the therapist may assemble a group of colleagues for the patient to give a speech to.

Armed with the techniques to control anxiety taught by the therapist, and speaking before a group a number of times under the guidance of the therapist the anxiety will ultimately lessen to a more normal level.
